This show is a sparkling collection of hits from the 1930's that were made famous by the films of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. These films had light romantic stories featuring Ginger as Fred's love interest. The Astaire/Rogers films showcased ballroom and tap dancing in Art Deco back-grounds set to beautiful music. These movies were very popular with Depression-era audiences who needed to have their spirits lifted.
Fred Astaire (Frederick Austerlitz)( 1899-1989) born in Omaha, Nebraska, originally started in show business with his sister Adele as his dancing partner. They worked their way through vaudeville and Broadway, only to break up when Adele married. Fred Astaire's first solo stage role was in the "GAY DIVORCEE" (1932) which he reprised in the 1934 film the "GAY DIVORCEE".
Ginger Rogers (Virginia McMath) (1911-1995) was born in Independence, Missouri. She also worked in vaudeville and on Broadway. Her film career began in New York during the late 1920's. Starting with short subjects, she moved quickly into feature films.
Astaire and Rogers first appeared as a team in "FLYING DOWN TO RIO" (1933). Although they were only supporting players, they stole the show! As a result, RKO featured them in eight subsequent popular movie musicals. Together they introduced many great songs by Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, Jerome Kern and George Gershwin.
