Lisa Fischer:
Born in Brooklyn New York. attended the High School of Music and the arts, went on to Queens College and then….
I thought I was going to be an opera singer but as luck would have it, I ended up working in clubs, doing demo/session work and combing the papers for opportunities…
My first “ job on the road” was with the Crytsals with Deedee Kennibrew.. She was a good teacher and very patient with me. I was scared to death… but soon after it started to become more like home on stage ….even though I had two left feet. I credit DeeDee for finding my right foot.
Soon after , I would work with a group called the “Marvelettes” . The name was owned by a manager at the time so there were no original members in the group but …there was a strong dedication to performing the music properly.
The choreographer for the Marvelettes asked me to audition for a man named “ Luther Vandross”. At the time I didn’t know his music well but I liked him the moment I met him… and in the years to come he would be my mentor and friend.
During my time with Luther, I worked for Chaka Khan, The Rolling Stones and Tina Turner and it was because of Luther’s faith in me that I was able to get a record deal through the careful management of Daniel Marcus which lead to a Grammy for Vocal performance.
Recently I've worked for Sting on a project called “If on a winters night” and I performed on 2 songs on the cd. Ive always found Sting to be a free spirit and the music on this project is so special to my heart.
I'm also featured on a very special project called Vocabularies by “ Bobby McFerrin” imagined by Linda Goldstein and produced by Roger Treece. This is one of those projects you just have to hear if you’re a lover of Bobby McFerrin and vocals because its just great music… Its delicious! And to sing this music was healing to my soul.
I'm currently working with Jazz trumpeter Chris Botti whom Ive met through my work with Sting and while studying for Chris’s show, I did some research and found that one of my favorite singers “ Morgana King” had done a version of one of the songs on Chris’s set list and it got me thinking….
Who knows what the future will hold? We’ll see……I’ll just keep my mind , ears and heart open….
